EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving showcases two vibrant and captivating birds of the Jamaican landscape: the Jamaican oriole (Icterus leucopteryx) and the blue dacnis (Dacnis cayana). The illustration, created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was published between 1816 and 1830 as part of the comprehensive "Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology" by Frederic Cuvier in Paris, France. The Jamaican oriole, with its striking black and orange plumage, is depicted perched gracefully on a branch, its beak open in a melodic song. The blue dacnis, on the other hand, is shown in a lively flight pose, displaying its brilliant blue feathers and contrasting black markings. Pretre, who began his career as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. His meticulous illustrations, such as this one, were engraved by Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault. This historical artwork not only showcases the beauty of these two birds but also offers a glimpse into the natural history research of the early 19th century. The intricate details of the engraving and the vibrant colors of the hand-painted elements bring these birds to life, making this a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology.
