This photograph captures the Iron Bridge of Osaka, Japan, as it stood in the late 1870s. A marvel of engineering and innovation, this iron suspension bridge was the first of its kind in Japan, connecting the Yodo River's northern and southern banks and significantly reducing travel time between the cities of Osaka and Sakai. The bridge, which spans over 1,100 feet, was designed by British engineer William Lincoln and constructed between 1869 and 1875. The bridge's elegant design, featuring two suspension cables and a central tower, was a testament to the advanced engineering knowledge of the time.
