EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spiritual essence of Varanasi, also known as Benares or Banaras, a city in northern India that has been a major center of Hinduism for over 3,000 years. The image shows Dashaswamedh Ghat, the main ghat or landing place on the sacred Ganges River. Dashaswamedh Ghat is renowned for its historical significance and is believed to be the site where the god Shiva performed the Dasaswamedh Yajna or the ten-headed horse sacrifice. The ghat is named after this mythological event and is marked by a large stone platform where rituals and ceremonies are still performed today. The steps leading down to the river are a hive of activity, with pilgrims taking a dip in the holy waters, performing puja or worship, and cremations taking place on the ghat's eastern end. The photograph, taken circa 1904, shows the ghat in all its grandeur, with the steps leading down to the river, framed by tall trees and set against the backdrop of the Vishwanath Temple, one of the most famous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The serene waters of the Ganges, dotted with small boats and the occasional boatman, add to the tranquil ambiance of the scene. The ghat's historical significance and its role as a pilgrimage site make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in India's rich cultural heritage. The photograph provides a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the ghat was a bustling hub of spiritual activity, much as it remains today.
