EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment Horatio Bottomley, the charismatic British financier, newspaper proprietor, and Member of Parliament, prepares to leave a Divisional Headquarters and head to the front lines in Arras, France, on September 13, 1917. Dressed in a World War One uniform, complete with tin helmet, Bottomley, who was born in 1860, exudes a sense of determination and resolve as he bids farewell to the soldiers and officers gathered around him. At the height of his influence, Bottomley was a passionate supporter of the war effort and an aggressive advocate for the unconditional surrender of Germany. He encouraged servicemen to voice their grievances in his popular journal, John Bull, and was a powerful orator, often speaking to large crowds in support of the war. Despite his patriotic fervor, Bottomley's past was far from spotless. He had previously been gaoled for fraud, but this did not deter him from using his platform to rally support for the war effort. The image of Bottomley, with the backdrop of the war-torn landscape of Arras, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and contradictions of the war era, and the powerful role that charismatic figures could play in shaping public opinion.
