This evocative photograph captures the determination and courage of two prominent Suffragettes, Miss Annie Kenny and Miss Mary Gawthorne, during the Hexham by-election of 1907. The women are seen writing on the pavement with chalk, a bold and defiant act of protest against the exclusion of women's suffrage in British politics. Annie Kenny (1869-1953) and Mary Gawthorne (1873-1962) were active members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), a militant organization that fought for women's right to vote using various tactics, including civil disobedience. The Hexham by-election presented an opportunity for the Suffragettes to draw attention to their cause, as it was taking place in a constituency where many women were eligible to vote due to property ownership. The photograph shows Miss Kenny and Miss Gawthorne in the act of writing "Votes for Women" on the pavement, surrounded by onlookers. Their bold action was met with both support and opposition, as some passersby expressed sympathy for their cause, while others jeered and taunted them.
