Curacoa and the native villages on the island of Tanna in the New Hebrides, South Pacific Ocean. The date is August 12, 1865, and the British warship, under the command of Captain F.A. Maitland, was on a mission to quell the unrest and assert colonial control over the region. The photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News, shows H.M.S. Curacoa in full force, shelling the bush-covered land where the hostile villages were located.
