The men in this photograph are in the process of loading a colossal 400mm, or approximately 16 inch, shell into a French gun. The shell, dwarfing the men who handle it, is a testament to the industrial might of the modern battlefield. With a weight of over 1,400 pounds and a range of up to 12 miles, these giant ordnances were a formidable weapon against the fortified positions of the enemy. The use of such massive artillery marked a significant shift in the nature of warfare during World War 1.
