Gladstone and the Midlothian Campaign - Waiting his Arrival

Front cover of the ILN depicting people awaiting the arrival at West Calder railway station of four-times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone on his tour of Midlothian during a US-style campaign which saw the elderly statesman come out of the retirement to take the ultra-Tory seat. Orchestrated by Lord Rosebery, Gladstone undertook a tour of the area which was highly publicised. He travelled on a Pullman train from which he was able to address gathered crowds. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, featured on the front cover of the Illustrated London News (ILN) in 1879, captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd gathered at West Calder railway station in Scotland. Four-times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, an influential figure in British politics, was making a surprise visit to Midlothian as part of an intensive campaign to regain the ultra-Tory seat, orchestrated by his ally, Lord Rosebery. Gladstone, then in his late sixties, had retired from politics but was persuaded to come out of retirement by the prospect of addressing the passionate crowds who had gathered to hear him speak. The campaign was reminiscent of the US-style rallies, with Gladstone travelling on a Pullman train that allowed him to address the masses from its platform. The image shows the determined and focused expression of the crowd, many of whom had queued for hours to secure their place. The sense of history being made is palpable, with the ILN's caption noting that tickets for the event cost up to five shillings – a significant sum at the time. Gladstone's Midlothian Campaign was a pivotal moment in British political history, demonstrating the power of public engagement and the enduring appeal of a charismatic leader. This photograph, with its striking composition and evocative sense of anticipation, offers a unique window into this fascinating period of political history.
