EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli during World War I on April 25, 1915. The image portrays a chaotic scene as soldiers and sailors wade ashore from their transport boats, under heavy fire from Turkish defenders concealed in the hills above. The Dardanelles Campaign, which aimed to secure a sea route to Russia and relieve pressure on the Eastern Front, was a costly and tragic failure for the Allied forces. The landing at Anzac Cove, named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, became a symbol of heroism and sacrifice for the ANZAC troops and their allies. The rugged terrain and harsh conditions of the Gallipoli peninsula made for a grueling and brutal battlefield, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. The photograph captures the determination and courage of the soldiers as they face the unknown, their boats bobbing in the water behind them. This historical image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men who fought in the Great War, and the enduring legacy of the ANZAC spirit.
