EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and determination of the London Fire Brigade (LFB) firefighters as they battle a severe blaze at 81/85 Commercial Road, East London, on 18th June 1957. The first floor of the large tailors workshop, located in the bustling King's Mile area, was engulfed in flames, with part of the second floor at the rear also involved. The flammable materials in the workshop, including fabrics and clothing, made for a particularly challenging firefighting situation. The brave firefighters are seen in action, using their hosepipes to direct jets of water towards the building's upper floors. The thick, smoky air is filled with the sound of water rushing through the hoses and the hiss of the flames being extinguished. Firefighters wear their iconic white helmets and carry hoses over their shoulders, their faces serious and focused. Policemen are also on the scene, assisting the LFB crews in managing the chaotic situation on the busy Commercial Road. The extended ladders lean against the building, providing access to higher floors and ensuring that no one is trapped inside. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 1950s and the era of black-and-white streets and the heroic work of the fire brigade. It is a reminder of the vital role that emergency services play in protecting our communities and keeping us safe.
