April 1808: The Fall of Godoy - A Pivotal Moment in Spanish History This striking image captures the arrest of the unpopular Spanish minister, Don Francisco de Borja Godoy y Alvarez de Silva, Duke of Alba, by King Fernando VII in April 1808. Godoy, who had risen to power through his relationship with the monarch's mother, had become a divisive figure in Spanish society due to his autocratic rule and perceived favoritism towards the French. The tension between the people and their minister reached a boiling point in the spring of 1808, as the Peninsular War raged on. With the French army advancing on Madrid, the people saw an opportunity to rid themselves of Godoy and his French influences. On April 13, 1808, a mob stormed the royal palace and demanded Godoy's arrest. Fernando VII, who had grown weary of his minister's rule, ultimately gave in to the pressure and ordered Godoy's arrest. In this photograph, we see the moment of confrontation between the king and the minister, as Godoy is led away to begin his exile in France. This event marked a turning point in Spanish history, as it signaled the end of the Godoy era and the beginning of a new chapter in the country's struggle for independence from foreign rule. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex political dynamics of the time and the power of the people to effect change.
