EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Edward Palmer Thompson, better known as E.P. Thompson, in deep conversation with Henry Grant during the 1993 Peace Pledge Union march in London. Thompson, an influential English historian and social theorist, was a prominent figure in the British New Left and a vocal peace campaigner. With a career spanning over four decades, Thompson's groundbreaking work, including "The Making of the English Working Class," helped redefine the study of history and challenged traditional Marxist interpretations. In this image, Thompson, dressed in a coat and hat, leans intently towards Grant, listening intently as he speaks. Grant, a fellow peace activist, wears a badge on his lapel that reads "Nuclear Disarmament Now." The background of the photograph is filled with the sea of protesters, all holding banners and signs, as they march towards Trafalgar Square. Thompson's commitment to peace and social justice was a defining aspect of his life and work. He was a founding member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and played a significant role in organizing the Aldermaston Marches in the 1950s and 1960s. Thompson's activism extended beyond peace campaigns, and he was also a vocal critic of imperialism, racism, and inequality. This photograph is a powerful reminder of Thompson's enduring legacy as a historian, activist, and champion of social justice. It captures a moment of intense engagement between two individuals committed to creating a more peaceful and equitable world.
