In the heart of the Western Front during World War 1, the East Surrey Regiment soldiers advanced towards enemy lines with an unexpected addition to their military equipment – footballs. In the chaotic and harrowing conditions of trench warfare, morale was a crucial factor in the outcome of battles. To boost the spirits and determination of his men, an officer of the East Surrey Regiment came up with an ingenious idea. As they charged through heavy enemy fire, the soldiers kicked the footballs, creating a surreal yet uplifting sight amidst the devastation of war.
