EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the intense gaze and unwavering determination of Eamonn De Valera, an Irish statesman and politician who played a pivotal role in shaping Ireland's modern history. Born on October 14, 1882, in New York City to Irish parents, De Valera spent most of his formative years in Ireland. He became a prominent figure in the Irish nationalist movement, advocating for Irish independence from British rule. In 1919, De Valera was elected President of the Irish Republic, and the following year, he led the Irish delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in an attempt to secure international recognition for the Irish Republic. Although the conference failed to grant Ireland its independence, De Valera's unwavering commitment to the cause did not wane. In 1921, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, granting Ireland limited self-governance. De Valera, however, was a vocal critic of the treaty, arguing that it did not go far enough in securing full independence. He led the anti-Treaty forces in the subsequent civil war, which lasted from 1922 to 1923. Despite losing the war, De Valera continued to be a significant political figure, serving as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland on three separate occasions between 1932 and 1948 and again from 1951 to 1954. This portrait, taken in 1921, captures De Valera at a pivotal moment in his political career, as he led the fight for Irish independence and faced the challenges of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The image conveys the intensity and conviction of a man who would not be swayed from his beliefs, making it a powerful and enduring symbol of Irish history and national pride.
