Dr Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) - English designer and theorist - best known as a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement. He was a major contributor to the allied Anglo-Japanese branch of the Movement, which makes this photograph all the more fascinating. In four months during 1876 and1877, Dresser travelled about extensively in Japan, recording his impressions in his work Japan, its Architecture, Art and Art-Manufactures. Date: circa 1877
