Dorothy's image is a testament to the influential women of the English Civil War era, a time of political upheaval and social change. Born into the wealthy and prominent Bradshaw family, Dorothy was the eldest daughter of John Bradshaw, a prominent Parliamentarian and judge who played a key role in the trial and execution of King Charles I. Her marriage to Richard Cromwell, the son of Oliver Cromwell, was a strategic union designed to strengthen the Cromwellian regime. Despite her privileged background, Dorothy's life was marked by tragedy and loss. She was only 23 when her husband, who had succeeded his father as Lord Protector in 1658, died suddenly, leaving her a widow with five young children to raise. Dorothy continued to play a significant role in the Cromwellian regime, acting as regent for her eldest son, Oliver, during his brief tenure as Lord Protector in 1659.
