In this photograph from circa 1910, the District Railway line in London Underground comes to an abrupt halt, leaving passengers momentarily surprised and jolted. The sudden stop has lifted the feet of some passengers off the floor, their expressions displaying a mixture of surprise and apprehension. Others, quick to react, have grasped the overhead straps, hanging on for dear life as the train car comes to a complete standstill. The sudden jolt and bumping against one another have created a palpable sense of tension in the confined space of the train car. The District Railway line, a precursor to the modern London Underground system, was the world's first underground electric railway, opening in 1868. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, when travel on the tube was a more rudimentary experience than it is today.
