EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking bust portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Brevet Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield Warner. Born on October 1, 1825, in Rensselaer, New York, Warner began his military career as a volunteer in the Mexican-American War. He rose through the ranks and served with distinction in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Warner first gained notoriety for his role in organizing the distinctive three-volley salute, known as "Taps," to honor the fallen during military funerals. He also played a significant role in the Battle of Gettysburg, commanding the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, III Corps, and helping to repel Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. This portrait of Warner, taken between 1861 and 1865, captures the general in the prime of his military career. The photograph was likely taken after his promotion to Brevet Brigadier General in recognition of his gallant service during the Battle of Gettysburg. The image shows Warner facing left, with a stern expression and piercing eyes that seem to convey a sense of resolve and leadership. Warner's military career continued after the Civil War, and he went on to serve in various posts throughout the United States. He retired from the army in 1888, having reached the rank of Major General. Warner passed away on October 1, 1897, in Washington, D.C. This powerful portrait serves as a testament to his military accomplishments and enduring legacy as a leader and innovator during the American Civil War.
