This charming postcard features a portrait of the renowned British composer, conductor, and teacher, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Born in Dublin on January 30, 1852, Stanford's musical talents were evident from an early age. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music before continuing his education in Leipzig, Germany, under the tutelage of renowned composers Moritz Moszkowski and Carl Reinecke. Stanford's prolific career spanned over six decades, during which he made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He held various teaching positions, including at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he mentored many notable musicians such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. As a conductor, Stanford led the premiere performances of several major works, including Edward Elgar's Caractacus and Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs. He also conducted the first performance of his own Symphony No. 4 in A flat major at the Proms in 1912. Stanford's compositions span various genres, including symphonies, chamber music, operas, and choral works. His most famous pieces include The Bluebird, The Snowman, and The Song of the Sea.
