This haunting image captures the crew of a German U-boat submarine during the First World War, emerging from the confined quarters of their submerged vessel to peer out at the world above from the viewing platform. The towering periscope stands proudly in front of them, a symbol of their deadly prowess on the high seas. The year was 1914, and the Great War had plunged the world into chaos and destruction. The submarine warfare that ensued was a brutal and effective tactic used by both sides, but it was the Germans who became notorious for their ruthless U-boat campaign.
