EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of unyielding bravery and selflessness displayed by Corporal James Lennox Dawson VC of the Royal Engineers during the First World War. The image, taken in 1915, depicts Dawson performing the heroic act for which he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross - the highest military decoration for valour in the face of the enemy. During the Hohenzollern Redoubt gas attack on the Western Front in October 1915, Dawson fearlessly exposed himself to the enemy's fire to give directions to his sappers and clear infantrymen from sections of the trench filled with poison gas. With incredible courage, he identified and removed three leaking gas cylinders from the trench, rolling them away from the danger zone under heavy fire. Dawson then fired rifle bullets into the cylinders to release the gas, saving countless lives and undoubtedly preventing a catastrophic disaster. The Victoria Cross citation for this remarkable act of heroism reads, "Corporal Dawson, on 13 October 1915, at Hohenzollern Redoubt, France, during a gas attack, when the trenches were full of men, Corporal Dawson exposed himself fearlessly to the enemy's fire in order to give directions to his sappers and to clear the infantry out of sections of the trench which were full of gas. Finding three leaking cylinders, he rolled them well away from the trench, again under heavy fire, and then fired rifle bullets into them to let the gas escape." Corporal James Lennox Dawson's unwavering courage and quick thinking during the 1st Great War's infamous Jan 17 Gas Attack at Hohenzollern Redoubt are a testament to the extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism that defined the era. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who risked their lives to protect and save others during the darkest days of human history.
