EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Raphael Semmes, a pivotal naval commander during the American Civil War. Born in 1809, Semmes rose through the ranks of the United States Navy before the conflict began. However, when the Southern states seceded from the Union, Semmes chose to serve the Confederacy. He was appointed captain of the CSS Alabama, a powerful raider that wreaked havoc on Union merchant shipping, sinking or capturing over 80 vessels between 1862 and 1864. Semmes' daring exploits earned him the nickname "The Terrible Toreador." The Alabama's reign of terror came to an end in August 1864 when she was engaged in a fierce battle with the USS Kearsarge off the coast of France. Although the Alabama was ultimately sunk, Semmes and his crew fought valiantly, going down with their ship. Semmes' military career ended in 1865 when he surrendered to Union forces. This portrait, taken during Semmes' later years, captures the intensity and determination that marked his military career. Semmes' legacy as a Confederate naval hero remains a significant chapter in American Civil War history. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and sacrifices of this pivotal period in American history. Dated from 1809 to 1877, this image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a crucial role in shaping the nation's past.
