EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a precious moment in British royal history, as Queen Victoria (1819-1901) cradles her great-grandson, the future King Edward VIII (1894-1972), during his christening at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, London, on May 23, 1894. Edward, the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary), is flanked by his father, George, and his grandfather, Edward VII, who was then the reigning monarch. The three generations of royals are dressed in their finest regal attire, with Queen Victoria wearing a black gown and diamond diadem, and the two princes in traditional white christening robes. The infant Edward, who would later abdicate the throne in 1936, appears calm and content in his grandmother's arms, surrounded by the love and support of his family. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the rich history of the British monarchy and the passing of the crown from one generation to the next.
