This striking portrait of Charles II, the English Monarch, dates back to the 17th century and was produced by the renowned English engraver, SamuelVertue. Born in 1630, Charles II was the eldest surviving son of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France. After the execution of his father in 1649, Charles went into exile in France and later in the Netherlands, where he spent over two decades planning his restoration to the English throne. In 1660, following the death of Oliver Cromwell and the collapse of the Commonwealth, Charles returned to England and was welcomed back by the people. He was crowned on May 23, 1661, marking the beginning of a new era in English history. This portrait, which captures the regal presence and confident demeanor of Charles II, is a testament to the artistic skill of SamuelVertue.
