EDITORS COMMENTS
This selection of Characterful Faces, brought to us by Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to the intriguing world of 1739. The image showcases an assemblage of unsavoury characters, each with their unique expressions of ruthlessness and loathing etched upon their faces. In the foreground, a toothless old hag gazes out with a piercing glare, her wrinkled features etched with the weight of a life lived on the hard edges of society. Her eyes, devoid of warmth, speak volumes of her cunning and survival. To her right, a drunkard, his face contorted in a grotesque mask of intoxication, stumbles through the mists of his own delirium. His disheveled appearance and glazed eyes tell the story of a life consumed by vice. Amongst these unsavoury figures, a baby lies nestled in the arms of a hussar. The contrast between the innocence of the child and the harsh reality of the surroundings is striking. The hussar's stoic expression belies the ruthlessness that lies beneath the surface. Lastly, an axeman, his face etched with the weight of a thousand lives taken, stands tall and unyielding. His cold, calculating gaze speaks of a life spent taking the lives of others, without remorse or hesitation. This historical image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to explore the complexities of human emotions and the intricacies of the human condition. The characters and expressions shown serve as a reminder that history is not just a series of dates and events, but a rich tapestry of stories and experiences that continue to shape our world today.
