EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard image captures the haunting legacy of Edith Cavell, a British nurse who became an icon of courage and sacrifice during World War I. The photograph, taken in 1865, shows Cavell in her nursing uniform, but it is the events that unfolded in 1915 that would immortalize her image. Born in Swardeston, Norfolk, England, in 1865, Cavell trained as a nurse in London before moving to Brussels to work at the Berkendael Institute, where she became the matron in 1907. When war broke out in 1914, Cavell remained in Belgium, providing essential medical care to soldiers from both sides of the conflict. However, her actions went beyond the call of duty when she began assisting Allied soldiers to escape to neutral Holland, helping more than 200 men evade capture. In August 1915, Cavell was betrayed and arrested by the German military. Despite being offered a chance to save her life by revealing the names of those she had helped, Cavell refused, stating, "I have no country. I have no loyalty, but to my duty as a nurse, and to my God." She was tried by a German military court and sentenced to death. On October 12, 1915, Cavell was executed by firing squad in Brussels, becoming a symbol of resistance and martyrdom for the Allied cause. The image of Cavell, with her steely gaze and unwavering determination, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, and her story stands as a testament to the power of compassion and courage in the face of adversity.
