Lauder and Thomas N. Miller, also appear in the image, both sporting similarly full beards and serious expressions. At the time of this photograph, Carnegie was just beginning his rise to prominence in the industrial world. He would go on to become a titan of industry, founding the Carnegie Steel Company and revolutionizing the steel industry with his innovative management practices and efficient production methods.
