This striking portrait captures the young and powerful presence of Carl V, also known as Charles I, at the age of 31. Born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1500, Carl ascended to the throne as Holy Roman Emperor in 1519 and as King of Spain in 1516 following the death of his grandfather, Ferdinand II of Aragon, and his grandmother, Isabella of Castile. In this image, Carl is depicted wearing the imperial insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, including the imperial crown and the mantle, as well as the royal crown of Aragon. The background of the painting features a pastoral scene with a sheep, symbolizing his rule over the Spanish kingdoms. Carl V is often remembered for his efforts to centralize power in the Habsburg Monarchy and to strengthen the Holy Roman Empire.
