EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Middle East: The Cairo Conference of 1921. Held in the Egyptian capital, this groundbreaking meeting brought together key figures to discuss the future of Mesopotamia, which would later become the modern-day Iraq. At the center of the image stands Sir Percy Cox, the British High Commissioner in Iraq, flanked by King Faisal I of Iraq and the renowned archaeologist and political figure, Gertrude Bell. Winston Churchill, then the Secretary of State for the Colonies, is seated to the right, his intense gaze fixed on the proceedings. The Cairo Conference marked a turning point in the British Mandate of Mesopotamia, as the attendees sought to establish a stable government in the region following the end of World War I. King Faisal I, a respected leader who had been exiled during the Ottoman Empire, was chosen to rule Iraq, with the support of the British. Gertrude Bell, who had played a significant role in the region's administration and was known as the "female Lawrence of Arabia," advised the group on local customs and politics. This historic gathering took place in the opulent Seraglio Palace, which once served as the residence of the Egyptian Khedives. The room's ornate decorations, including intricate arabesque designs and rich fabrics, serve as a striking backdrop to the important discussions taking place. The photograph offers a glimpse into the diplomacy and intrigue that shaped the Middle East in the early 20th century.
