The Boxer Rebellion, also known as the Boxer Uprising, was a violent anti-foreigner movement that erupted in China between 1898 and 1901. In this image, Boxer rebels are seen sabotaging the railway tracks, a significant symbol of China's modernization and its growing connections to the outside world. The railway line, which was a vital artery for trade and transportation between the inland capital of Peking and the bustling port city of Hong-Kong, was a prime target for the Boxers. They believed that the presence of foreigners and their influence on Chinese culture and society would weaken China and lead to its downfall.
