Bonang Players - Bali

The Bonang is a musical instrument used in the Javanese gamelan (percussion orchestra). It is a collection of small gongs (sometimes called kettles or pots ) placed horizontally onto strings in a wooden frame (rancak), either one or two rows wide. All of the kettles have a central boss, but around it the lower-pitched ones have a flattened head, while the higher ones have an arched one. Each is tuned to a specific pitch in the appropriate scale. They are typically hit with padded sticks (tabuh). Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dating back to the 1910s, showcases the Bonang Players of Bali, an integral part of the rich Javanese gamelan tradition in Indonesia. The Bonang is a unique percussion instrument, characterized by its horizontal arrangement of small gongs or kettles, set on strings within a wooden frame, known as a rancak. The Bonang can have one or two rows of kettles, each with a central boss. The lower-pitched kettles have a flattened head, while the higher ones have an arched one, all carefully tuned to specific pitches in the appropriate scale. The Bonang is played using padded sticks, or tabuh, which allow for a soft, resonant sound. In this photograph, we see the dedicated musicians of Bali skillfully striking the gongs with their tabuh, creating a harmonious symphony that is synonymous with the cultural heritage of Java and South East Asia. The Bonang is just one of many instruments in the gamelan orchestra, which includes metallophones, gongs, drums, and various other percussion instruments. This photograph serves as a window into the past, offering a glimpse into the vibrant and diverse musical traditions of Indonesia. The Bonang Players of Bali continue to captivate audiences with their enchanting melodies and rhythms, preserving the rich cultural heritage of their ancestors for future generations.
