EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, captures the elegant forms of two distinct raptor species: the Black Kite, Milvus migrans, and the Swallow-tailed Kite, Elanoides forficatus. The illustration, taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" by Frederic Cuvier, was produced under the artistic direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and the skillful engraving of Guyard. The painter of natural history responsible for this masterpiece was Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Black Kite, depicted on the left, is a widespread bird of prey found across Africa, Asia, and Europe. With its glossy black plumage and distinctive white patches on its wings, this adaptable bird is known for its soaring flight and feeding habits that include a varied diet of small mammals, reptiles, and birds. On the right, the Swallow-tailed Kite, Elanoides forficatus, is a graceful and agile bird native to the Americas. Its most striking feature is its long, pointed, and swallow-like tail, which it uses for balance while hovering in the air to catch its primary prey - insects, particularly dragonflies and wasps. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these two fascinating birds but also highlights the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of the time. The intricate details, vivid colors, and lifelike quality of the illustration are a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and craftsmen involved in its creation.
