This poignant image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Atlanta, which took place on July 22, 1864. The Battle of Atlanta was a significant engagement during the American Civil War, with the Confederate Army under the command of General John Bell Hood attempting to defeat the Union Army, led by General William T. Sherman and General James B. McPherson. The Union forces ultimately emerged victorious, but at a great cost. At the forefront of this print is the tragic scene of the death of General James B. McPherson. McPherson, a key Union commander, was mortally wounded during the battle by a Confederate artillery shell. He was carried to a nearby house, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. McPherson's death was a significant loss for the Union Army, as he was a capable and experienced leader. The print, created around 1888, depicts the Army of the Tennessee engaged in the battle. The chaos and intensity of the conflict are evident in the chaotic scene, with soldiers on horseback and on foot, cannons firing, and smoke rising from the battlefield.
