Baroness Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906), an English philanthropist of great renown, is shown here in a full-length, elegant dress. Known for her generosity and charitable works, she was a significant figure in Victorian society. Born on July 17, 1814, Georgina, as she was known, was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Courtown. She came into a substantial inheritance at a young age, which she used to support various causes throughout her life. Her philanthropic efforts ranged from providing financial assistance to individuals in need, to supporting educational institutions and religious organizations. One of her most notable acts of charity was the establishment of the Bethlehem Hospital in London, which provided shelter and care for the homeless and destitute. She also supported the construction of the Anglican Cathedral in Jerusalem, and was a patron of the arts, supporting the works of many notable artists and writers. This portrait, created in 1871, provides a glimpse into the life of this remarkable woman.
