This print depicts Marcelo Azcarraga Palmero (1832-1915), a prominent Spanish military figure and conservative politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Manila, Philippines, Azcarraga Palmero rose through the ranks of the Spanish military, earning numerous decorations and accolades, including several medals displayed in this portrait. His impressive military career culminated during the reign of King Alfonso XII of Spain, for whom he served as the Chief of the General Staff. However, Azcarraga Palmero's influence extended beyond the military realm. He was also an influential conservative politician, serving as a deputy in the Spanish Cortes (parliament) and holding various cabinet positions. His political stance was characterized by his support for the monarchy and the maintenance of traditional values. The engraving, skillfully executed by A. Carretero, beautifully captures the essence of Azcarraga Palmero's distinguished persona.
