EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the sight of armoured cars, nicknamed "Rhinos," making their way through the rugged terrain of East Africa during World War I. Dated to 1916, the image shows these armored vehicles in transit, likely en route to the strategic town of Handeni, now located in Tanzania. The British Army relied heavily on these armored cars, which offered better mobility and protection than traditional horses or trucks, to navigate the challenging African landscape and outmaneuver enemy forces. The First World War marked the first time that armored vehicles were used extensively in a military conflict. These Rhinos, manufactured by the Armoured Motor Car Company in the United States, were shipped to East Africa to support British forces fighting against the German colonial army. The vehicles were well-suited to the region, with their lightweight design and ability to traverse difficult terrain. The troops aboard these armored cars would have faced numerous challenges during their journey, including long distances, harsh weather conditions, and the ever-present threat of enemy attack. Despite these challenges, the armored cars proved to be a valuable asset, enabling the British to maintain control over key areas and ultimately secure victory in the East African campaign. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a visual representation of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the military during the First World War. The Rhinos, with their distinctive silhouettes and determined drivers, evoke a sense of adventure and resilience, making this an iconic image from a pivotal moment in history.
