EDITORS COMMENTS
Amos: A Prophet's Call in the 18th Century, an illustration from the Reuben Luke Collection, Mary Evans Picture Library. Amos, a humble shepherd and farmer from the southern kingdom of Judah, is called by God to become a prophet in the 8th century BC. This powerful biblical scene depicts Amos receiving his divine commission, as described in the Book of Amos in the Old Testament. With a burning coal taken from the altar, the priest Ahijah lays it upon Amos' mouth, symbolizing the prophetic spirit that will now speak through him. The illustration, created in the 19th century, captures the intensity and awe of this transformative moment. Amos, with a look of deep reverence, stands before the altar, his hands raised in submission to God's will. The rich colors and intricate details of the priest's robes and the temple setting add to the sense of sacredness and otherworldliness. Amos' story is a testament to the power of God's call and the courage of those who answer it. Despite coming from an unexpected background, Amos boldly delivers God's messages to the northern kingdom of Israel, condemning their social injustices and calling them to repentance. This illustration serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the prophetic tradition in Christianity.
