EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken at the popular French Riviera resort of Biarritz in 1933, we find two prominent figures of the Roaring Twenties and 1930s social scene: Alice Keppel, formerly the mistress of King Edward VII, and Elsa Maxwell, the American gossip columnist, writer, and society hostess. Alice Keppel, known as "Mrs. George Keppel" in her later years, was once the favorite mistress of the late King Edward VII, who ruled the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910. Their scandalous relationship began when Alice was just 18 years old, and it continued for over 20 years. Although the affair ended with the King's death, Alice remained a fixture in high society, known for her beauty, charm, and wit. Elsa Maxwell, on the other hand, was a larger-than-life personality who rose to prominence in the 1920s as a gossip columnist and society hostess. She was known for her sharp tongue, quick wit, and ability to make and break reputations. Maxwell was a regular at the most exclusive social events and was friends with many of the era's most famous figures, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Cole Porter, and Marlene Dietrich. The photograph captures the two women in casual attire, enjoying a sunny day at the beach in Biarritz. Alice wears a striped bathing suit and a wide-brimmed hat, while Elsa dons a stylish swimsuit and sunglasses. They sit on a beach chair, chatting and laughing, seemingly unaware of the cameras that capture their moment of relaxation and friendship. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of two remarkable women who played significant roles in the historical events and social scenes of their time. The image is a reminder of the decadence, glamour, and intrigue of the Edwardian and 1930s eras.
