EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1918, we find Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869-1951), a renowned English author and playwright, known for his supernatural fiction and ghost stories, on the right, in deep conversation with Alfred Taylor (1877-1918), a celebrated Punch artist and comic illustrator. The image, published in The Tatler, reveals an unexpected side of Blackwood's life during the First World War. Blackwood's literary talents were not confined to the realm of fiction. He dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts, working with the Red Cross in Rouen as a searcher for missing men. The poignant search for the lost and the unknown resonated with Blackwood's storytelling abilities, providing a unique blend of his literary prowess and compassionate spirit. Despite the historical significance of this episode in Blackwood's life, it is not mentioned in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. However, the dictionary does acknowledge his work with British intelligence as an undercover agent in Switzerland during the war. Alfred Taylor, a man of artistic vision, captured this moment of camaraderie and shared it with the world. The photograph offers a glimpse into the lives of these two remarkable men, who, despite their different professions, found common ground in their dedication to serving their country and helping those in need. This powerful image, a testament to the human spirit, stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the unexpected ways in which individuals contributed to the war effort.
