EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Born in 1874 at Windsor Castle, Alfred was raised in the shadow of his illustrious parents and elder brother, the future King George V. Alfred's life was marked by tragedy and mental instability. In 1890, he was involved in a dueling incident with his brother-in-law, Prince George of Wales, which left him with a serious head wound. The incident was kept a secret from the public, but it is believed that Alfred's mental health began to deteriorate after this incident. On December 22, 1899, Alfred was found in his bedroom at Windsor Castle with self-inflicted wounds to his chest. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he died the following day at the age of 25. The cause of his suicide attempt remains a mystery, but it is believed that he was suffering from severe depression and mental instability. This photograph, taken in Edinburgh in 1893, shows Alfred in a more carefree moment. He is dressed in the uniform of the Royal Scots Greys, a regiment with which he served as a second lieutenant. The image captures the young duke's striking resemblance to his father, Prince Albert, and offers a glimpse into his military career. Alfred's tragic death was a shock to the British public and the royal family. He is buried in the Royal Vault at Windsor Castle, near his grandfather, King George III, and his great-grandfather, King William IV. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a life cut short by mental illness and personal tragedy.
