EDITORS COMMENTS
Alexander the Great, reigning king of Macedonia from 336 to 323 BC, stands triumphantly on the battlefield of Issus, located near Iskanderun in modern-day Turkey. The year was 333 BC, and Alexander had led his formidable army against the vast horde of Asiatics and mercenaries commanded by King Darius III of Persia. In this pivotal moment of ancient history, Alexander's military prowess and strategic brilliance were on full display. With a determined expression and brandishing a spear, Alexander surveys the battlefield, having successfully driven Darius and his forces from the field. The Persian king, seen in the background on his chariot, looks dejected and defeated. The Battle of Issus was a significant turning point in the Wars of the Diadochi, a series of conflicts that followed the death of Alexander's mentor, Aristotle, in 322 BC. This battle marked the end of the Achaemenid Empire and solidified Alexander's status as a legendary conqueror. The scene is filled with the chaos and intensity of war, with soldiers clashing with spears and shields, horses rearing and charging, and the dust of battle rising into the air. The vast array of troops, including Greek mercenaries, Persian infantry, and cavalry from both sides, underscores the magnitude of this historical moment. This evocative image, captured by Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to a time when the fate of empires hung in the balance and the legends of great leaders were born on the battlefield.
