This striking portrait depicts Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond (1734-1806), an influential British diplomat and statesman who served as a minister in Paris during a pivotal moment in the history of Anglo-American relations. Born into the prestigious Dukes of Richmond and Lennox lineage, the Duke's political career began in earnest when he was appointed as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1765. However, it was his tenure as a British minister in Paris from 1766 to 1772 that would cement his place in history. During his time in Paris, the Duke found himself at odds with the British government's increasingly confrontational stance towards the American colonies. He vehemently denounced the ministerial policy, advocating instead for a more conciliatory approach. The Duke's opposition to the government's position was driven, in part, by his belief in the importance of maintaining the peace and stability of the British Empire. The Duke's efforts to mitigate tensions between Britain and its American colonies were not successful, and the situation ultimately led to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1775. Despite this disappointing outcome, the Duke's principled stance and diplomatic skills are still recognized as significant contributions to the complex and often contentious history of Anglo-American relations.
