EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century engraving from the Liszt Collection transports us back to a pivotal moment in history - the Rebellion in Sudan, 1883. The image is divided into three distinct scenes, each depicting significant events during this tumultuous period. In the first panel, we are introduced to Sheik Mohammed Taller, the Principal Ulema and Leader of the Eastern Soudan Insurrection. His commanding presence and determined gaze reveal his role as a central figure in this rebellion against Egyptian rule. Moving on to the second panel, we find ourselves in Sinkat where Tewtik Bey, Governor of the Soudan, awaits aid while entrenched within its walls. The tension is palpable as he strategizes and prepares for battle against overwhelming odds. The third panel takes us to Tuka - a place stained with tragedy. Here lies Commander Moncrieff who valiantly fought but tragically lost his life. This scene also depicts around three hundred Egyptian soldiers and Bashi-Bazouks surrounded by rebel forces. Through intricate engravement techniques characteristic of Victorian-era artistry, this vintage print captures both the historical significance and artistic beauty of its time. It serves as a poignant reminder of an era marked by rebellion and resistance against colonial powers. As we observe this historic artwork from Arkheia's collection, it allows us to reflect upon past struggles for independence while appreciating the skillful craftsmanship that brings these moments to life once again.
