EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection captures a moment of intense engagement and anticipation. In the center, a man is seated on a chair placed on a stepped platform, holding the attention of an audience. The atmosphere is charged with energy as two men in the foreground point towards something, perhaps emphasizing an important aspect of the performance. The image belongs to a series of five illustrations depicting scenes from Jacques Philippe Joseph de Saint Quentin's play "Mad Day, Marriage". This particular scene may be from Act II, where Figaro's character takes center stage. The play itself was written by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and first performed in 1784. The etching and engraving technique used to create this print showcases exquisite craftsmanship. Measuring approximately 6 7/16 x 3 15/16 inches (164 x 10 cm), it offers intricate details that bring the characters and their emotions to life. Attributed to Jacques Saint Quentin, a French artist born in Paris in 1738, this artwork also credits Claude Nicolas Malapeau for his contribution. Malapeau was active during the late eighteenth century in Paris. This remarkable piece transports viewers back to an era filled with theatrical brilliance and cultural significance. It serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation of one of Beaumarchais' most celebrated works – "Mad Day, Marriage. "
