Pleasure dome JLP01_10_27076
Sherwood Forest Holiday Village, Rufford, Newark and Sherwood, Nottinghamshire. An interior view of the swimming pool and domed roof above, at the Sherwood Forest Holiday Village.
Work began on 17th March 1986 on the development of a holiday park at Sherwood Forest for Center Parcs. The park would be the first Center Parcs development in the country and would consist of 600 bungalows and leisure and sport buildings; the contract also comprised the external landscaping of the site. The contract was for 14 months, with completion of the park expected to be May 1987; the handover took place on 15th May 1987 and the park opened to guests on 3rd July. The futuristic dome structure of the swimming pool was topped out on 2nd July 1986. It was covered with Texlon plastic and maintained a constant temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. When completed, the swimming pool had a wave pool, waterfalls and a 75m water slide. The slide was edged with natural stone and the pool was surrounded by " boulders and lush vegetation". A cropped version of this photograph was published as part of a double-page spread in the August 1987 edition of Team Spirit, the Laing newsletter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Sherwood Forest Holiday Village in all its glory. Stepping into this interior view of the swimming pool, one is immediately transported to a world of leisure and relaxation. The domed roof above adds an air of grandeur to the scene, creating a truly unique atmosphere. The development of this holiday park by Center Parcs began on 17th March 1986, marking a significant milestone as it was their first venture in the country. With 600 bungalows and various leisure and sport buildings, this park promised endless fun for its guests. The completion date was set for May 1987, with handover taking place on 15th May that year. The futuristic design of the swimming pool's dome structure is truly remarkable. Topped out on 2nd July 1986, it was covered with Texlon plastic and maintained a constant temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Inside, guests were treated to a wave pool, waterfalls, and an exhilarating 75m water slide surrounded by natural stone edges. Surrounded by lush vegetation and strategically placed boulders, this oasis within Sherwood Forest provided an idyllic setting for visitors seeking respite from their everyday lives. It comes as no surprise that such a stunning image found its way into publications like Team Spirit's August edition in 1987. Through this photograph from Historic England Archive, we are reminded not only of the beauty captured within these walls but also of the rich history behind one of Nottinghamshire's most beloved holiday destinations.
