BULL RING CENTRE, BULL RING, BIRMINGHAM, WEST MIDLANDS. A group of Dutch women in traditional dress posed outside the Bull Ring Centre, on the opening day of the Holland is Here exhibition.
The Holland is Here exhibition at the Bull Ring Centre was held during the last week of February and first week of March in 1965. It was opened by J. Bakker, Netherlands Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, and was organised in partnership with the Netherlands National Tourist Office. The exhibition included demonstrations of clog making, pottery making and painting, displays of Dutch glass, windmills (one can be seen in this image at the east court), and fresh flowers. There was also a demonstration kitchen where visitors could sample traditional Dutch food. An article on the exhibition was published in the April 1965 edition of Laings Team Spirit newsletter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of cultural celebration in the heart of Birmingham. The Bull Ring Centre, bustling with activity, serves as the backdrop for a group of Dutch women dressed in traditional attire. It is the opening day of the Holland is Here exhibition, an event that brought a taste of Dutch culture to England in 1965. Organized by the Netherlands National Tourist Office and opened by J. Bakker, Netherlands Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, this exhibition aimed to showcase various aspects of Dutch life and heritage. From clog making to pottery demonstrations, visitors were immersed in the rich traditions and craftsmanship that define Dutch culture. In this image, one can spot a windmill standing proudly at the east court - an iconic symbol synonymous with Holland's landscape. Fresh flowers add vibrant pops of color against their monochrome surroundings while tantalizing aromas waft from the demonstration kitchen where traditional Dutch delicacies are being prepared. The women featured here exude grace and elegance as they strike a pose outside the Bull Ring Centre. Their traditional dress reflects centuries-old customs passed down through generations, reminding us all that culture is something to be cherished and celebrated. Decades later, this photograph continues to transport viewers back in time - capturing not only fashion trends but also preserving memories of a unique cultural exchange between two nations.
