PUTNEY HIGH STREET, PUTNEY, WANDSWORTH, GREATER LONDON. Alfred Vanderbilt driving his coach Venture along Putney High Street.
The American businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1877-1915) was enormously wealthy. A keen sportsman, he had a particular interest in horses and traditional coaching skills. He spent a great deal of time in Britain and by 1908 was running two coach services from central London to Brighton, driving one of them himself. Vanderbilt caused much excitement in the British public, with fans waiting patiently by the roadside for the coach, driven by Vanderbilt, to pass.
Alfred Vanderbilt died aboard the RMS Lusitania, which was torpedoed by a German U-boat in May 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the opulence and elegance of a bygone era. In the bustling streets of Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London, Alfred Vanderbilt can be seen confidently driving his coach Venture along Putney High Street. A prominent American businessman known for his immense wealth, Vanderbilt had a deep passion for horses and traditional coaching skills. During his time in Britain, Vanderbilt operated two coach services from central London to Brighton, personally taking charge of one of them. His presence caused quite a stir among the British public who eagerly awaited the sight of his magnificent coach passing by. The grey horses pulling the carriage add an air of grandeur to this snapshot from early 20th century Edwardian England. Tragically, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt's life was cut short when he met his untimely demise aboard the RMS Lusitania in May 1915. Torpedoed by a German U-boat during World War I, this fateful event marked an end to an extraordinary life filled with wealth and adventure. Preserved through time by photographer William O Field, this image serves as a reminder not only of Vanderbilt's love for horse-drawn transport but also as a glimpse into an era characterized by trotting steeds and refined hobbies.
