Yusuf and Zulaykha (recto); Illustration and Text (Persian Verses) in an Anthology

Yusuf and Zulaykha (recto); Illustration and Text (Persian Verses) in an Anthology with some verses from Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones) of Jami; The Fifth Throne, c. 1556-65. The Khamsa, a suite of five poems (khamsa is Arabic for five) written in the twelfth century, was, like the earlier Shahnama, concerned with the history and legends of pre-Islamic Iran. But Nizamis interest was with love rather than war. In this, the second of the poems, he tells the story of these two famous star-crossed lovers. It is difficult to assign the illustrations here to specific episodes, but they may be concerned with Khusros stay at the court of Shirins aunt, the Queen of Azarbaijan. Shirin and her companions prepare bowls of pomegranates in a courtyard before the palace

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a beautiful piece of Persian art titled "Yusuf and Zulaykha (recto); Illustration and Text (Persian Verses) in an Anthology with some verses from Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones) of Jami; The Fifth Throne, c. 1556-65". Created during the Safavid period in either Shiraz or Mashhad, Iran, this artwork is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Khamsa, a collection of five poems written in the twelfth century, explores themes of love and romance rather than focusing on war like its predecessor Shahnama. In this particular poem, Nizami tells the tale of Yusuf and Zulaykha – two famous star-crossed lovers whose story has captivated audiences for centuries. While it's challenging to pinpoint specific episodes depicted in these illustrations, they may depict Khusros' time at Queen Azarbaijan's court. One scene portrays Shirin and her companions preparing bowls filled with pomegranates within a courtyard before the palace – an image that exudes elegance and tranquility. Painted using opaque watercolor and ink on paper, this masterpiece exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship prevalent during the Safavid era. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this artwork remains an enigmatic treasure from history that continues to inspire awe among art enthusiasts worldwide.
