Venus Wounded by a Roses Thorn, c. 1516
Venus Wounded by a Roses Thorn, c. 1516. This composition alludes to The Lament for Adonis by the Greek poet Bion (active about 100 BC). In the poem, Venus, distraught by the death of her lover Adonis, wanders barefoot in the woods and is wounded by brambles. Although Bion implores Venus to " weep no longer in the thickets, " the poem does not describe the moment depicted here when she plucks a thorn from her foot, imaginatively conceived as a vehicle to present a classical female nude. The wide-eyed hare near Venus is an ancient symbol of fertility and sexual desire

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Venus Wounded by a Roses Thorn, c. 1516" transports us to the realm of ancient mythology and classical artistry. Inspired by the Greek poet Bion's poignant work, "The Lament for Adonis" this composition beautifully captures a moment of vulnerability and resilience. In this scene, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, is depicted as a nude figure standing amidst lush woods. Distraught by the loss of her beloved Adonis, she wanders barefoot through nature's embrace only to be wounded by brambles along her path. It is at this very moment that we witness Venus delicately plucking a thorn from her foot. The artist behind this masterpiece, Antonio Salamanca, skillfully brings forth both emotion and symbolism in his engraving. The wide-eyed hare positioned near Venus serves as an ancient symbol of fertility and sexual desire – perhaps alluding to the passion shared between Venus and Adonis. As we gaze upon this print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, we are transported back in time to an era where mythological tales intertwined with artistic expression. This exquisite piece invites us to contemplate themes such as love's fragility and the strength found within vulnerability.
