Sketchbook, 1859. Creator: Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880)
Sketchbook, 1859. Gifford was an American landscape painter belonging to the second generation of Hudson River school artists. Based in New York City with a studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building, Gifford took annual summer trips to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and other scenic locations in New England. This sketchbook accompanied the artist on his expedition in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he drew sites such as Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island, Casco Bay. Gifford used such graphite studies as the basis for oil paintings worked up in his studio, such as A Home in the Wilderness (1866)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sketchbook from 1859, created by Sanford Robinson Gifford, an esteemed American landscape painter. As a prominent figure in the second generation of Hudson River school artists, Gifford's talent and passion for capturing nature's beauty are evident in this collection. The sketchbook accompanied Gifford on his expedition to New Hampshire and Maine in 1859, where he immersed himself in the stunning landscapes of the region. From Dixville Notch to the White Mountains and Peaks Island in Casco Bay, Gifford diligently sketched these picturesque sites using graphite. These detailed graphite studies served as the foundation for his later oil paintings that were meticulously crafted within his studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City. One notable example is "A Home in the Wilderness" (1866), which was inspired by Gifford's sketches from this very sketchbook. This bound volume not only represents a significant piece of American art history but also provides insight into Gifford's creative process and dedication to capturing nature's majesty. Preserved with care by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate both Gifford's skillful technique and his deep connection with America's natural landscapes during the 19th century.
